What Really Happens During a Home Remodel? A Week-by-Week Guide

Spoiler Alert! It's not as scary as you think.
If you've never been through a home remodel before, chances are you've asked yourself a few questions…
Will my house be a disaster?
How long will this take?
When will it actually start looking like the Pinterest board I showed my contractor?
The truth is, remodeling can feel overwhelming—but it doesn't have to. At TJR Improvements, we believe that knowing what's coming next makes the entire process a lot less stressful (and a lot more exciting!).
Every project is unique, but here's a behind-the-scenes look at what a typical remodeling timeline looks like.
Week 1: Out with the Old!
This is the week everyone loves.
Demo day has arrived!
We'll carefully protect your home, set up dust barriers, and get to work removing the old cabinets, flooring, walls, or fixtures that are making way for your new space.
Yes, it gets a little noisy.
Yes, it might look worse before it looks better.
And yes...that's completely normal.
Think of it as the "before" picture in your remodel story.
Week 2: Building the Bones
Now that we've cleared the space, it's time to start bringing your vision to life.
This is when you might see:
New walls framed
Windows or doors installed
Structural changes completed
Spaces starting to take shape
It may not look glamorous just yet, but this is where the magic starts happening.
Week 3: The Stuff You Can't See (But You'll Definitely Appreciate)
Now it's time for plumbing, electrical, and HVAC work.
These aren't the Instagram-worthy moments, but they're some of the most important parts of your remodel.
Better lighting.
Better outlets.
Better plumbing.
Better everything.
It's what's behind the walls that helps your home function beautifully for years to come.
Week 4: It Finally Starts Looking Like a Room Again!
After inspections are complete, we close everything back up with drywall.
Once the drywall is taped, sanded, and finished, you'll suddenly start thinking...
"Okay...I can finally picture it!"
This is usually the point where excitement starts replacing the temporary chaos.
Week 5: The Fun Part Begins
Now we're installing the things you've probably been waiting months to see.
Cabinets.
Tile.
Flooring.
Vanities.
Beautiful showers.
Every day you'll notice something new, and your dream space starts coming to life.
This is also when friends and family usually start saying...
"Wow...it's really coming together!"
Week 6: The Details Make the Difference
Trim, doors, paint, hardware, and all those finishing touches begin to transform the space from "construction zone" into "home."
It's amazing how much personality these little details add.
Week 7: The Grand Finale
Countertops are installed.
Light fixtures go up.
Faucets sparkle.
Mirrors are hung.
Appliances are connected.
Suddenly, it's no longer a construction project...
It's your brand-new space.
The Final Walkthrough
This is one of our favorite days.
We'll walk through the finished project together, answer any questions, make sure every detail meets our standards (and yours), and explain your warranty.
Our goal isn't just to complete your project.
It's to make sure you absolutely love walking into the room every single day.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
Every remodel is different, and sometimes life throws a curveball.
Material deliveries can shift.
Weather can impact exterior projects.
You might even decide halfway through that you want to add a coffee bar or upgrade your shower (it happens more often than you'd think!).
The good news?
We'll keep you informed every step of the way. No guessing. No wondering what's next. Just honest communication and a team that's committed to making the process as smooth as possible.
